Celebrated filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli, the visionary behind Baahubali and RRR, has unveiled the A&M Motion Capture Lab at Annapurna Studios, Hyderabad. This facility, described as India’s most advanced motion capture and virtual production hub, is a joint venture between Akkineni Nagarjuna’s Annapurna Studios, Shobu Yarlagadda’s Mihira Visual Labs, and Hollywood’s Animatrik Film Design—the company behind Avengers: Endgame, Spider‑Man: No Way Home, and RRR.
First Film to Use the Lab: Varanasi
Rajamouli confirmed that key sequences of his upcoming film Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Prithviraj Sukumaran, were already shot at the lab. The film’s ambitious scope demanded cutting‑edge technology, and the MoCap facility provided the precision and flexibility needed to bring its vision to life.
Why This Lab Is a Game‑Changer
Hollywood‑Grade Technology in India: With Animatrik as a partner, Indian filmmakers now have access to the same tools used in global blockbusters.
Creative Freedom: Directors can pre‑visualize complex shots, capture nuanced performances, and seamlessly integrate live action with digital environments.
Global Access: The lab is open to both Indian and international filmmakers, positioning Hyderabad as a global hub for cinematic innovation.
Industry Impact
This facility marks a turning point for Indian cinema, bridging the gap between local storytelling and global production standards. It reduces costs, eliminates the need for overseas tech outsourcing, and empowers filmmakers to experiment with immersive environments and digital doubles.
Rajamouli’s unveiling also signals India’s readiness to compete with Hollywood in the era of virtual production and high‑end VFX.
