Imagine stepping into a room and seeing a life-sized hologram of someone miles away—interacting, talking, and sharing space as if they were right there. This vision of seamless, immersive communication became a reality at Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE)
A Leap into the Future
The Holoportation Project was spearheaded by a talented group including Mitali Verma, Akshat Chauhan, Yash Swastik, and Samridhi Singh, under the leadership of their team lead. Guided by Prof. Sanjeev S and GopalaKrishnan Thirumoorthy, and in collaboration with Munish Dhiman and Gesture Research, the team set out to bridge distances and redefine remote presence.
What is Holoportation?
Holoportation is an advanced 3D capture and transmission technology that enables a person to appear as a real-time, life-sized hologram in a remote location. Unlike traditional video calls, holoportation creates a sense of true presence and interaction, breaking down the barriers of physical distance.
The MAHE Milestone
A highlight of the project was the successful creation and projection of a live hologram of Pro Vice Chancellor Madhu Veeraraghavan. The team had the privilege of demonstrating this cutting-edge technology to MAHE’s senior leadership, including Vice Chancellor Dr. M.D Venkatesh and Aditya Jadhav. Witnessing the seamless interaction between the hologram and the audience was a powerful testament to the potential of immersive technology.
Beyond the Demo: Lessons Learned
The Holoportation Project was not just a technical achievement but also a lesson in teamwork and innovation. The team learned to manage cross-functional collaboration, coordinate live demonstrations, and translate complex technology into real-world applications—all under the pressure of a live audience.
Why It Matters
Holoportation’s impact extends far beyond the novelty of holograms. It has the potential to revolutionize communication in fields like education, healthcare, and remote work. Imagine doctors appearing as holograms in remote clinics or teachers guiding students in distant classrooms, all in real time.
Looking Ahead
This milestone at MAHE is a testament to what’s possible when vision, collaboration, and technology come together. The team’s journey has only fueled their excitement for the future of immersive tech, and they look forward to more opportunities to innovate and inspire—bringing tomorrow closer, one hologram at a time.
