New images have leaked of Alibaba’s upcoming AR/AI smart
glasses, branded as "Tmall Genie WOW" The device integrates multiple functions
including photography, music playback, navigation, payment, translation, and
teleprompter capabilities. Key hardware features include an RGB camera with a
Sony image sensor, two JBD single-green MicroLED projectors, and two surface
relief diffractive waveguides. The chipset combines Qualcomm AR1 with Hengxuan BES2800.
The design employs a rear-mounted layout, placing the mainboard and battery at the
end of the temple arms, resulting in slimmer arms that enhance wearing comfort. The
product is scheduled for official launch on July 26 at the World Artificial Intelligence
Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai.
Leaked images reveal that Alibaba’s design markedly differs from many current
AI/AR glasses, which typically house the mainboard and battery in the middle section
of the temple arms. This is largely due to the Qualcomm AR1 chip’s size (over 1cm
per side), which leads to bulkier arms seen in products like Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley
Meta, and Xiaomi AI glasses.
Earlier attempts, such as YIWEAR’s AR glasses, placed components at the end of
the arms to achieve slimness but sacrificed key features like cameras and speakers
for extreme thinness, limiting functionality.
In contrast, Alibaba’s "Tmall Genie WOW" adopts an all-in-one strategy—achieving
slim temple arms through rear placement while maintaining full functionality. The
glasses feature a camera for photography and AI vision, dual MicroLED projectors for
AR display, and speakers for audio playback. This ambitious design underscores
Alibaba’s commitment to delivering a comprehensive, high-performance AR/AI
wearable.
