Meta’s Sam 3D and Now ByteDance’s Depth Anything 3 (DA3) are game changers for XR Creation

Last week, Meta launched two groundbreaking state-of-the-art models: SAM 3D Objects for object and scene reconstruction, and SAM 3D Body for human body and shape estimation. You can read and learn more about these innovations here: https://tinyurl.com/344vspfk.

Now, ByteDance has introduced Depth Anything 3 (DA3) on Hugging Face, a revolutionary model set to accelerate 3D creation for XR creators and world builders. DA3 can transform any visual input—a single image, a messy set of photos, or a full video—directly into spatially consistent 3D geometry. Remarkably, it requires no camera poses or complex multi-task architectures; it uses only pixels powered by a simple transformer backbone with a single depth-ray objective.

DA3 is offered in three versions: the main DA3 series, a metric depth model for actual distances, and a monocular depth series for relative depth. Its ability to generalize effortlessly across various viewing setups makes it exceptionally versatile.

This technology integrates seamlessly with SLAM and 3D Gaussian Splatting workflows, making it ideal for XR development, rapid scene capture, or quick prototyping of immersive worlds from regular videos.

Combined with Meta’s Sam 3D, which sets new standards in 3D scene reconstruction, these tools dramatically reduce the time and complexity of generating 3D assets. They empower creators to build richer, more interactive XR experiences faster. For XR developers seeking efficient 3D content generation, these innovations are indispensable milestones.
