Mumbai Local Trains Enter Virtual Reality Era: Indian Railways Launches VR Training Program

Writer: Eddie AvilEddie Avil

Indian Railways is revolutionizing its maintenance training by introducing Virtual Reality (VR) technology for staff working on Mumbai's lifeline - its local trains. The pioneering program, set to launch next month, will debut at the Kurla Car Shed.

The innovative VR system offers railway workers an immersive, hands-on training experience without the need to physically access train compartments. Through this technology, maintenance staff can explore detailed 3D models of train components - from crucial bogie systems to passenger amenities like lights, fans, doors, and windows.

"The VR module will transform how our workers learn and perform repairs, covering everything from minor adjustments to major overhauls," explains a senior railway official. The comprehensive training system is expected to be operational within 15 days, providing workers with in-depth knowledge before they tackle actual maintenance tasks.

To house this cutting-edge program, Indian Railways is transforming the old barrack car shed into a modern training facility. The center will feature multiple classrooms, each accommodating 40-60 trainees, with every workstation equipped with the new VR training system.

The timing of this technological upgrade is particularly significant, coinciding with the centenary of Mumbai's first electric local train, which made its historic journey between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Kurla Station on February 3, 1925. As Indian Railways celebrates this 100-year milestone, the implementation of VR training represents a bold step into the future of railway maintenance and operations.
