Lincoln Unlocked: Revolutionary App Brings Lincoln's Legacy to Life in the Digital Age

In a groundbreaking fusion of history and technology, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum (ALPLM) has unveiled "Lincoln Unlocked," an innovative digital tool that transforms how visitors experience one of America's most revered presidents. Launched on Lincoln's birthday, this free application breathes new life into history through augmented reality and interactive storytelling.

Imagine pointing your smartphone at an exhibit and watching historical figures materialize before your eyes, or hearing Lincoln himself deliver the Gettysburg Address. These captivating experiences are now reality thanks to the collaboration between ALPLM, Google Public Sector, and Thoughtworks.

"Abraham Lincoln's story still resonates today, more than 200 years after his birth. We must always search for new and better ways to tell that story to as many people as possible," says Christina Shutt, executive director of the ALPLM.

The app doesn't just enhance the museum experience—it democratizes it. Available in six languages and designed with accessibility features for visitors who are Deaf or visually impaired, Lincoln Unlocked ensures that Lincoln's legacy is available to all.

History buffs can embark on themed tours like "Women of the Era" and "Forever Free," exploring the often-overlooked contributions of women and African Americans during Lincoln's time. For families and friend groups, the "History Detective" feature transforms learning into a competitive trivia game.

The technology brings artifacts to life in remarkable ways. In the slavery exhibit, visitors can examine digital renderings of artifacts like identification badges enslaved people were forced to wear in Charleston. At the Gettysburg Address display, users can witness a virtual recreation of the bloodiest battle in American history.

Perhaps most impressively, the app extends the museum experience beyond physical walls. Users anywhere can explore Lincoln's world and learn about historical figures like Robert Smalls, who helped 16 people escape slavery, or Anna Ella Carroll, a writer who gathered intelligence for the Lincoln administration.

"Lincoln Unlocked lets us share diverse stories and images that add context to Lincoln's accomplishments," Shutt explains. "It gives visitors more opportunities to return and explore history from new perspectives. And it helps us connect with younger generations that routinely explore the world with phone in hand."

The technology behind the experience is cutting-edge. "Technology has the power to transform learning, creating immersive experiences that bring history to life and make it accessible to everyone," notes Brad Hoffman, Director of State & Local Government and Education at Google Public Sector.

Joe Murray of Thoughtworks adds that the app "sets a new standard for accessibility in the museum world, ensuring that everyone can benefit from the power of AR."

This innovation continues ALPLM's tradition of merging scholarship with technology, following in the footsteps of their renowned "Civil War in Four Minutes" video and the "Ghosts of the Library" theatrical experience.

Lincoln Unlocked is available for free download on Google Play and Apple's App Store. History enthusiasts, educators, and families can find more information at LincolnUnlocked.com.

In an age where digital experiences often pull us away from historical understanding, Lincoln Unlocked proves that technology, thoughtfully applied, can actually deepen our connection to the past.
