India's ADA Goes Immersive: Three XR and AR Tenders Signal a Digital Leap in Fighter Development

India's Aeronautical Development Agency is making a decisive push to embed extended reality and augmented reality into the core of its aerospace engineering pipeline. In a compressed five-day window between September 17 and 22, 2026, ADA issued three separate technology tenders that together sketch a coherent digital engineering strategy — one that spans the full development arc from conceptual cockpit design through physical component inspection.

Designing in the Virtual

The first tender (GEM/2026/B/8046493) targets an XR simulation suite with an earnest money deposit of ₹10 lakh, signaling a procurement of meaningful scale. The goal is unambiguous: give ADA engineers the ability to step inside a virtual cockpit before a single physical prototype is fabricated. Beyond aesthetics, this kind of immersive environment enables rigorous crew-station ergonomics assessment — how a pilot interacts with controls, sightlines, and displays under simulated conditions. Getting that right in XR saves enormous time and cost downstream.

Closing the Loop on the Shop Floor

The second tender (GEM/2026/B/8025680) moves the digital thread from design into manufacturing. The proposed AR inspection system would overlay precise digital design data directly onto physical aerospace components, allowing quality teams to compare what was built against what was specified — in real time, on the part itself. This kind of overlay-driven inspection reduces human error, accelerates sign-off cycles, and creates an auditable digital trail that traditional paper-based QA simply cannot match.

Keeping the Software Backbone Alive

The third tender rounds out the picture with a three-year maintenance contract for ADA's existing Dassault Systèmes environment — covering CATIA, ENOVIA, DELMIA, MBSE, 3DEXPERIENCE, and MBD licenses. These are not peripheral tools. They form the model-based engineering backbone that connects design intent to manufacturing execution. Keeping them current and supported is what makes the XR and AR layers meaningful rather than disconnected novelties.

A Strategy, Not Just Procurement

Taken individually, each tender is routine. Taken together — as reported by idrw.org — they represent something more deliberate. ADA appears to be stitching together an integrated digital engineering environment where virtual design, physical verification, and model-based data management reinforce each other. For a program like the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft, compressing development timelines while maintaining precision isn't optional. These tools are how you do it.

India's aerospace ambitions have long outpaced its domestic tooling. That gap is quietly getting smaller.
