The National Zoological Park in New Delhi is undergoing a major modernization as part of a ₹400‑crore upgrade plan. A key highlight of this transformation is the introduction of interactive signage powered by QR codes, designed to enrich the visitor experience.
Zoo authorities are replacing around 500 animal signboards and 300 plant signboards with new versions that allow visitors to scan QR codes for detailed audio‑visual information. Each enclosure will now display the animal’s name, species, and feeding behavior, while the QR code will provide deeper insights into habitats and environments.
According to Zoo Director Sanjeet Kumar, the initiative goes beyond basic information. Directional signage, maps, and even “do’s and don’ts” boards will be made interactive, with Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) tools guiding visitors to their favorite spots.
In the second phase, plants and trees will be labeled with both their common and scientific names, supported by QR codes for expanded details.
The modernization plan also focuses on animal welfare. Floors and enclosures are being redesigned for comfort—for example, tortoise enclosures are being upgraded with coco peat flooring to maintain humidity, while monkey enclosures are being fitted with natural branches instead of rope ladders. Additional ponds and fountains are expected to be ready before summer.
Efforts are also underway to fill more than 50% of staff vacancies, with consultants such as botanists being hired to strengthen expertise. Minor works are scheduled for completion within February, marking a significant step toward making the Delhi Zoo more engaging, educational, and visitor‑friendly.
