Two additional corporation schools in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, have been selected to establish state-of-the-art Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) laboratories, aimed at enhancing the educational experience through immersive technology. This initiative follows the successful launch of a similar facility at Corporation High School in Peelamedu, inaugurated recently by the state school education minister.
The newly identified schools for the AR-VR labs are Corporation Higher Secondary School on Oppanakara Street and Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School in R.S. Puram. According to a senior official from the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC), these schools were chosen due to their high student enrollment and adequate infrastructure to support the advanced labs. The official emphasized that the labs will be developed in phases, with the first phase targeting completion by the end of the academic year.
Each lab is expected to be equipped with cutting-edge AR-VR tools, including headsets, interactive software, and dedicated systems to facilitate experiential learning. The initiative, funded under the Smart City Mission, aims to introduce students to advanced technologies, fostering skills in fields like science, mathematics, and computer studies through interactive simulations. The estimated cost for setting up each lab is approximately ₹25 lakh, covering equipment, software, and training for teachers.
The Peelamedu school’s AR-VR lab, launched as a pilot, has already shown promising results, with students engaging in virtual experiments and 3D simulations that make complex concepts more accessible. Teachers have reported increased student participation and interest in subjects that were previously considered challenging. Encouraged by this response, the CCMC plans to expand the program to more schools in the coming years.
A CCMC official stated, “The goal is to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and practical application. By integrating AR-VR technology, we aim to make education more engaging and prepare students for a tech-driven future.” The corporation also plans to train teachers to effectively utilize these tools, ensuring seamless integration into the curriculum.
Parents and educators have welcomed the move, highlighting its potential to modernize education in corporation schools. “This is a game-changer for students who may not have access to such advanced tools otherwise,” said a parent from R.S. Puram. The CCMC is also exploring partnerships with tech firms to sustain and upgrade the labs over time.
As Coimbatore continues to embrace smart education initiatives, the addition of AR-VR labs in these schools marks a significant step toward transforming the learning landscape for thousands of students.
