Halo Smart Glasses: Brilliant Labs Unveils a New Era of Private, On-Device AI

For years, the promise of truly intelligent smart glasses has danced tantalizingly on the horizon. Yet, one critical question has consistently loomed large: privacy. How do we embrace the power of real-time AI, vision, and voice in a wearable device without compromising our most sensitive data? Brilliant Labs, with their upcoming Halo smart glasses, isn't just asking that question – they're providing a groundbreaking answer.

Set for a Q1 2026 launch at a compelling $349, Halo smart glasses represent an industry-first: a device designed from the ground up with an On-device Privacy Engine. This isn't just a feature; it's a foundational philosophy that sets a new benchmark for wearable AI

The Privacy Revolution: Keeping Data Local

The core of Halo's innovation lies in its commitment to local processing. In an age where every interaction often means data streaming to the cloud, Brilliant Labs is flipping the script. All video and audio captured on Halo – and all future Brilliant Labs devices – will be processed entirely locally on the phone in your pocket.

What does this mean for the user?

  • Unprecedented Privacy: None of your spoken words or visual data will sit vulnerable in the cloud. Your sensitive point-of-view information stays on your device.

  • Real-time Responsiveness: By processing data locally, responses feel immediate. There's no latency introduced by round-trips to remote servers.

  • Enhanced Security: The risk of data breaches associated with cloud storage is dramatically reduced when the data never leaves your control.

  • Efficient Operation: Local processing leverages your phone's Neural Processing Unit (NPU), keeping the glasses cool and minimizing battery drain.

This encompasses the full suite of AI functions: streaming audio pipelines (wake word detection, speech-to-text, text-to-speech), image inference and encoding, and embedding generation. This level of on-device AI for such complex tasks is, frankly, astounding.

The Engineering Masterclass: Powering On-Device Intelligence

Achieving this feat wasn't easy. It required deep technical expertise and strategic partnerships that push the boundaries of edge AI. Brilliant Labs collaborated with some of the sharpest minds in the field:

  • TheStage AI (Kirill & Azim Kurbanov): TheStage AI was instrumental in building an on-device inference layer for Halo's compute-heavy assistant loop. Their expertise in ANNA optimization for Neuphonic’s models, including transcription, wake word, and diarization, was critical. They developed a production SDK with hybrid GPU+NPU inference, ensuring peak on-device performance and efficient power use, alongside a memory manager to keep multiple networks stable under load.

  • Neuphonic (Sohaib A.): Neuphonic powers Halo's ultra-low-latency speech layer. Their specialization in incredibly efficient on-device Text-to-Speech (TTS), fine-grained generation, and natural-sounding voice cloning is crucial for seamless, private vocal interactions.

  • Liquid AI (Ramin): An existing partner, Liquid AI provides the most performant, edge-optimized vision language models in the world, enabling Halo's sophisticated on-device image inference.

This collaborative effort showcases a deep understanding of what it takes to bring powerful AI to a constrained, wearable form factor without compromising user experience or, critically, privacy.

Setting New Standards for the Industry

Bobak Tavangar, the driving force behind Brilliant Labs, emphasizes that this "hard, painstaking work" was done because they believe it is "important — for all of us." They hope their commitment to privacy will inspire other companies developing AI glasses to follow suit.

As AI glasses become more ubiquitous, the question of data handling will only grow in importance. Brilliant Labs isn't just launching a product; they're launching a philosophy. Halo's On-device Privacy Engine isn't just a bell and whistle; it's a statement about the future of personal technology. It demonstrates that we don't need to compromise our privacy to enjoy an incredible device experience.

The future of AI-powered wearables looks brighter, and significantly more private, thanks to Brilliant Labs' pioneering work with Halo. Get ready for a uniquely personal device that respects your space as much as it enhances your world.
